More than 5,300 prisoners were released from custody by the Afghan authorities due to the threat of the spread of coronavirus infection.
Today, 253 prisoners were released from Pul-e-Charkhi prison in Kabul. According to the head of the prison, a total of 5374 prisoners were released on the basis of a presidential decree.
Ahmad Rashid Totahil, the head of the country’s main prisons department, noted that such measures are being taken in an attempt to prevent the outbreak of COVID-19 in places of detention. According to him, cases of infection with coronavirus among prisoners have not yet been recorded.
Note, according to the decree of the President of Afghanistan, Ashraf Ghani, at least 10,000 prisoners are supposed to be released from Afghan prisons. Moreover, prisoners accused of involvement in terrorist activities are not subject to release.
Official data indicate that the spread of coronavirus infection in the country is accelerating. Over the past day, 70 cases of coronavirus infection have been reported in Afghanistan.
The total number of people infected in the country has reached 784. According to the Afghan Ministry of Health, most cases are in the provinces of Kabul and Herat.
