Afghan President Ashraf Ghani issued a decree on Thursday to release thousands of prisoners from prisons in order to prevent the spread of coronavirus in prison.
It is noted that the presidential decree does not include persons who have received any terms of imprisonment for crimes related to an encroachment on the national security of the state.
As Ahmad Rashid Totahil, head of the Afghan Prison Oversight Office, explained, “from 9,000 to 10,000 prisoners can be released under a presidential decree in 10 days.” He explained that, first of all, those suffering from incurable diseases and prisoners older than 50 will be released from prisons.
According to the latest data from the Ministry of Health of Afghanistan, the number of people infected with coronavirus in the country reached 80. Last Sunday, the first fatal outcome was recorded in Afghanistan.
Earlier, Afghan Minister of Health Firozuddin Feroz said that the epidemic of the disease caused by coronavirus can affect 80% of the country’s population, and the number of deaths can reach 110 thousand.
On Thursday, April 2, 26 prisoners from the Lagar Central Prison were released. By such measures, the president of Afghanistan seeks to stop the rapid spread of coronavirus in the state.
